Kyoko Saiyuki
“Kyoko – Kyoko!” A woman in her early 30’s yelled across the classroom. It was a class inside Karakura Town’s high school and included about 25 students. The woman’s voice was directed at the back corner of the room, closer to the windows on the teacher’s right. As she yelled, the other students laughed. “What are you all laughing about!?” The teacher yelled, becoming furious at the situation she was in.
This teacher was only a substitute, so she wouldn’t know the customs of the classroom. All she knew about the girl she was trying to acquire the attention of, was that the girl’s attention was on some form of hand-held device. Angered at the girl’s lack of interest in the class, she made her way over to the girl’s seat. “You doing it wrong, hehehe” One of the girls said, as she laughed, while the teacher passed her. “I’m doing it wrong?” The teacher asked, baffled that a student would suggest that she was doing something wrong.
“That there is Kyoko Saiyuki – she is really obsessed with video games…” Another female students began. “That doesn’t mean she’s allowed to play them in class!” The teacher stated, sternly. “It does.. She’s one of the smartest students in school and she always gets her work done, so most teachers let her play her games.” A third student explained to the unaware teacher. “Wait.. She’s allowed to play video games in class because she’s smart?” All the students in the class nodded in response to her question.
“Not just because she’s smart, but because..” This student was interrupted by the teacher, as she headed over to Kyoko’s desk. Once she arrived at the desk, she immediately grabbed the device that was in the girl’s hand. As hard as the teacher pulled on the device, it remained in the young girl’s hand.
Kyoko was in a trance as she played the game in front of her; she was enjoying herself. She heard her name a couple times as she played, but she wanted to get to the nearest save point before addressing whatever wished to gain her attention. However, when she arrived at a save, she suddenly felt some kind of force on her arm. As undeveloped as her arm looked, she was able to keep a grip on the game in front of her, but she was also promptly reintroduced to reality.
She raised her head a bit, not to look at who was confronting her, but to figure out what was pulling on her arm. Unlike the normal human, she went about analyzing her arm and looking up its length until she found something that was not familiar. Of course, she came to the teacher’s hand on the hand-held came she was holding. Kyoko’s eyes followed the teacher’s arm, and then body, upward until her large, brown eyes met with the eyes of the teacher.
“Um.. y.ye. yes?” She asked with a rather quiet voice. Kyoko wasn’t familiar with the person that was trying to take her game – fear began to well up inside her as she gaze diverted from the teacher and looked over the various figures inside the classroom. “Kyoko-chan, we’re reading a section in the book, you’re a bunch of pages behind. She was asking you a question.”
Kyoko moved her body, so as to be able to see the board. ‘Page 1-35’ She thought, as she read what was on the board. She picked up the book that sat on her desk and opened it to the first page. At first she looked back up to the teacher’s face, and then back down to the book. The teacher did not expect what she would do next. The young, brown haired girl began to quickly flip through the pages while her eyes moved left to right at amazing speeds.
“She asked which characters were affected by his death.”
~The Rest of the Class Later~
Needless to say, the substitute teacher was baffled by the end of the class. Kyoko answered the first question after only flipping through the pages. At first, she was skeptical and figured that the girl had read the book ahead of time, but the students brought over other text. Text after text, followed by question after question, it became apparent that the girl was actually reading as she flipped through the book. Well, actually, the students explained that she was simply memorizing everything as her eyes moved across the text.
Kyoko left the classroom, clueless to the humiliation the teacher was feeling after being proven wrong. After walking out the classroom door, she took the orange hat in her hand and placed it on her head. Once the hat was secure, she pulled out the handheld game she was playing earlier and made her way out of the school.
“It amazes me that she can get by in school like that.” Said a voice, that no one near Kyoko could hear, maybe not even Kyoko herself. It was the spirit known as Sami, a manifestation of Kyoko’s power. She floated just over Kyoko’s head, a small sprite-like spirit with long blonde hair and a blue, skin-tight outfit. “The day isn’t over yet! It’s just about to reach the fun part!” Exclaimed another one of Kyoko’s spirits. This one was Maria, a sprite-like woman with brown hair, a red shirt and blue overalls. “Um.. Maybe she’ll.. Watch where she’s going today?” A third sprite-like being, Lyn, said. This one had blonde hair, like the first, but she wore a green tunic and cap.
The three sprites followed Kyoko, possibly without her noticing, anxious as to what events would unfold throughout the walk home. “So who’s on duty today?” Sami asked, curious. “I.. believe it was Maria” Lyn answered in a rather quiet voice. “Yep! No harm’s coming to this girl, while I’m on watch!” Maria said confidently. “Huh?” Maria noticed the other two sprites were looking at something, so she turned around to check out what.
Kyoko was now standing before a crosswalk. Because she had very little worldly experience, she didn’t know that there were signals directing when to walk. What did catch her attention were the cars that were flying by. ‘Should I walk now.. wait a cars coming.. um.. wait there’s a truck.’ Times like these were the few times that she wasn’t mindlessly playing a video game. She watched the cars and trucks drive by, unsure of when it would be appropriate to cross. The only thing that registered to her was that she didn’t want to be hit by one of those vehicles.
Kyo began to look both ways as she stood there, panicking mentally as she tried to think of a solution to her situation. Finally, she decided she’d cross the street, “Is she crazy!” Maria shouted. A large truck was incoming from Kyo’s right. Maria quickly looked around her, to make sure there weren’t any witnesses to what she was about to do, before disappearing. The necklace Kyoko wore began to glow red and the red glow began to engulf her clothing over a couple seconds.
“Okay, I’m in control!” Came Maria’s voice, out of Kyoko’s mouth. As she said that, she quickly jumped forward, out of the way of the truck. She quickly looked to the left upon landing, further in the street, to find that a car was incoming from the left. It was then that the red glow disappeared; uncovering Kyo’s outfit that changed to the red shirt and blue overalls that Maria usually wore. Kyoko’s orange hat was replaced by a red cap with a white ‘M’ on it. Maria, who was now in control of Kyo’s body, forced Kyo’s leg to push off the ground. Maria’s influence on Kyoko allowed her body to jump up twice the height she could without the spirits’ aid. Even once in the air, Maria had Kyo’s legs push down on the air, and again she was able to jump up.
Kyoko’s body finally landed on the other side of the road, without a scratch. The car and truck drivers stopped to look at her, amazed at what she did, and Maria reacted, “Looks like we better get away from here!” Kyoko’s body, in Maria’s outfit, began running down the road. “Hey, let me take over, I got a plan.” Sami said. The necklace around Kyo’s neck began to glow blue and the glow consumed the Red Outfit. Seconds later, the red shirt and overalls were replaced by a blue, skin-tight suit. A yellow energy then appear on the outfit; with the introduction of the yellow energy, Sami had Kyoko’s body jump forward, as if to do a front flip. Faster than the eye can see, her body was sealed into a large, sphere-like shape. On Kyoko’s eyes, inside the ball-shape, the visor she wore displayed the area around her.
Sami used the visor’s scans of the area around her to maneuver the ball shape she was in. She used her brains and small size to quickly escape any person that was interested in how they performed the earlier feat. Once she found a side-walk where it was safe, she undid the ball form and allowed Kyoko to awaken.
Kyo opened her eyes, unsure of why they were closed in the first place. “Huh..?” She began to look around her as if she didn’t know how she got to the place she was standing. ‘Wait… I know that road.’ She thought, as her eyes came to a sign with the road name. Though unsure of how she got to where she was, she was happy to know that her house wasn’t too far away. She pulled back out her game and went back to playing, as she walked the final distance home.
