Young Sayurin Momoiro had finally reached her destination after traveling for a couple hours from Karakura town. She now stood on stone steps that seemed to extend infinitely into the woods ahead of her. On her left and right, Cherry blossoms blew back and forth, lettering their petals cover the region. She remembered this place; she walked on these steps before, decades ago. Looking all about the stone steps, she could not help but remember events of so long ago. It was unusual for souls to remember too much about their living life, but being here was enough to recover all of them.
Yuri looked at one step and remembered falling, when she was a young human. She only remembered it because there were the initials of some couple carved into them. She saw a statue, still standing after all these years, she remembered passing when she ran up and down the stairs. She remembered the cherry blossoms; she had planted some of them when she was young, in the human world.
The place she was at now was a temple. It was made, so many years ago, as the center of a town that once sat in the area. That town was Sayurin’s village – it was a village of shinobi. It was apparent to Sayurin that her ninja clan must have been destroyed years ago because she saw no signs of the village other than the temple ahead of her. So she kept walking up the way too familiar steps.
Of course, as a shinigami, she should not have been at this location. Why? Because if she had any relatives that owned paintings of her, they would have either caused her trouble or put the puzzle pieces together. To avoid such events, Sayurin had a custom-made Gigai designed in order to make her physical look differ from her actual looks. The hair of the Gigai was a black and the eyes were brown. The body structure was smaller, making her look like a girl around the age of 14. Her chest was flatter, she stood around 4 foot 4 inches, and her face looked cuter. Her hair was tied back into two tails. The clothing she wore looked similar to that which the Onmi wear.
It was a good thing that she made the decision to disguise her physical look because she wouldn’t believe what she saw when she got to the top of the stone steps. She came to the square of the temple and the first thing she saw almost made her cry. Sitting in the middle of the temple were a number of statues depicting heroes of her clan, most of which were in good shape. What made her emotional was the first statue she saw. Without hesitation, she ran over to the statue to confirm her suspicions. The statue showed a young woman wearing clothing characteristic of a ninja of years ago. She had long hair and eyes that showed only ambition. It displayed her throwing something, but what was unclear – unclear to anyone, but her. For just a moment, the memory flashed through her mind. She remembered a katana flying from her hand and then a large explosion.
Upon the pedestal that held the statue, the nameplate remained embedded in the stone and read, ‘In dedication to Sayurin Momoiro.’ “I didn’t know they would do something like this.” She said out loud as she stood there, just staring at the statue. She took in every detail down to the small imperfections that have appeared on the artwork’s surface. She was so charmed by the statue, that she almost didn’t notice the figure that was approaching her from behind.
Yuri went to turn at the presence she felt, but before she could even react, she had been pinned to the ground near the statue. Whether it be because of her weaker body while in the Gigai, or that she was simply out-maneuvered, was unclear, but she was now on the ground with a knife to her neck. “Who are you; what are you doing here?” asked a feminine voice.
The voice came from Yuri’s assailant; she was a young woman. The woman donned a green, short-sleeve kimono that came down to her knee. She had short purple hair and yellow eyes. The woman had to be at least a foot taller than Yuri and her chest seemed abnormal in size. The look in the woman’s eyes hinted that she wasn’t going to back down without finding out answers.
“I’m.. um.. Rin Moiro.” Yuri was forced to respond, not wanting to give out her real name. “I was told that I could learn hand-to-hand combat here!” She stated louder. The woman looked her up and down – her stare seemed to look through Yuri and analyze her very soul. “Hand-to-hand combat? What does a little girl like you know about Hand-to-hand combat, let alone the kind taught here?” She said smugly. ‘Little girl!?’ Yuri thought, becoming annoyed at this woman. “I’m not a little girl! And I probably know more about it than you!” That comment provoked the woman a lot more than Yuri had expected.
Had Sayurin been the height that she was used to, she may not have escaped the woman’s pin, without getting hurt. But, just being slightly smaller allowed her to quickly push herself away from the woman’s grasp as she came down with the knife. It was obvious to Sayurin that the woman had no intent to kill her, but she wasn’t planning for a haircut. Yuri rolled to the side and quickly pushed herself up from the ground. The woman quickly got off the ground and came running at her, discarding the knife in the process.
The woman swung at Yuri from the left and Yuri quickly dodged. The woman took her foot up and tried to knock Yuri to the ground and Yuri quickly brought her leg down and used the force to propel her body above it. Then using unusual skill, the woman quickly brought her other leg around. Yuri hadn’t seen the move coming, but quickly jumped back, but the woman somehow used her momentum to spring forward at Sayurin. Yuri was now pinned to the statue. “You know, maybe you are worth training.” She snickered while still holding Yuri in place.
The woman let go of Yuri and began to laugh as she walked a couple feet away. “Rin was it? What is it that you wish to learn.. and why?” She said the last part with a curious tone, as she turned to look at Yuri. “My family descends from this village here, and before they passed away they began to train me in the art of taijutsu that they studied here.” Yuri mostly lied. She did have family here and they did teach her the art, but she knew that the time periods were way different. “I see, we get a couple of you case, though I have never encountered one as skilled as you. Training you might be fun. By the way, that statue you were looking, I was named after the woman you see there. The name is Sayuri Momoiro, the great niece of that woman.”
Sayurin was left even more speechless than she was when she saw the statue. She was now being introduced to by her niece, how could she expect the events to turn out like this. Deep down Yuri didn’t want to hear this; she didn’t want to be reminded about what happened years ago. The following conversation would only consist of where they would train and how long.
Yuri wanted to get through the training so she could get out of there, but she knew the training would take time. As came apparent from their short battle, Yuri’s great niece appeared to be better at hand-to-hand combat. The reason for this made sense to her, ‘I tried to avoid thinking too much of that past. I haven’t practiced what I learned from it in centuries.’ Most of her combat skills were based on what she was taught at the academy. The only reason she returned her was because she knew those skills would not hold up against stronger opponents. In comparison, she knew that the taijutsu skills she had learned years ago were better suited for a larger range of situations. Her village taught each of the various hand-to-hand arts and they were what she intended to improve upon. Even if she was being trained by humans, the skills would prove to be priceless when applied to her Hakuda.
And so started the training that, to Sayurin, would be a nightmare. Each and every movement in that place reminded her of her human life. No matter how much she was willing to risk her life for those important to her, she now felt a bit of grief that she ended it all so early. Many things crossed her mind as she trained; how his parents and the clan were, when did she get a younger brother or sister that would eventually lead to this niece of hers, what happened to the village. The thoughts kept pressing on. It reminded her of what happened back when she first arrived in Soul Society. Back then, she freed herself from doubt as to whether she did what she felt was right by not thinking about her human life at all. She tried to do it again; the more memories and thoughts that crossed her mind, the harder she tried to seal them away. The only good they did was giving her the emotional support to allow her to excel at the training.
The training consisted of 6 days of non-step sparring between the two. The niece did not necessarily teach Yuri anything, but rather, she fought on and when Yuri caught on how to counter one trick, she came out with another. They would have kept going, but the 6th day was when Yuri had become able to counter most of her niece’s combos. It was no surprise, Yuri tried to keep her mind on the objective at hand, and to do so she had to become completely focused on the events at hand. Once she finished, no words were said and she just walked away and made her way back to Seireitei thinking, ‘I will forget this place once again.’
A Couple Days Later.
“Can you thank your captain for me? This practice will help me out a lot.” Yuri was now standing in an arena prepared for her and the two women before her. After completing the training she had in the human world, she was now going to make good use of it in combat versus the two shinigami in front of her. Both of these shinigami were those from Squad 2, possibly even members of onmi. The match between her and the two was arranged by Yuri’s request and was accepted because it had to be confirmed that she actually did improve while in the Human world, that she didn’t just use it as an excuse to hang out in the human world.
“Don’t worry about it – we are also getting some practice out of this,” Stated one of the two women, a woman with purple hair wearing a mask over her face. The other woman simply prepared for the fight. Yuri analyzed both of them, taking in their appearances. The one that had talked had purple hair and blue eyes and was dressed, much like herself, with the pants of her uniform omitted to form a dress. On her face she wore a black mask. She stood a couple inches taller than Sayurin. The other woman had dark green hair with yellow eyes. She wore the uniform similarly, but her mask covered the left half of her face. She stood at a taller height of around 5 foot 6 inches.
“One of you, just make the call!” Stated the girl with the green hair. She presented a stern look at the two next to her. Yuri presented a smile before saying, “Fine, when I say go, we start. Remember, it’s only hand-to-hand fighting!” Just like that, the women became quite and began to tense up their limbs. The fight was going to be 2 on 1 and neither side was prepared to lose. Yuri gave one last glance at each of the two before finally stating the word, “go!”
The purple haired woman came charging at Yuri first. Her eyes showed an intent to kill as her body thrust forward. Yuri quickly took in the event before her and made a guess at her opponent’s intent. She was going to attempt and powerful blow to Yuri’s body. Yuri went looking for the other one; her assumption would be found true. The green haired woman was running directly behind the first. Yuri thought back to her training, ‘One of them is going to thrust forward or hit me from above or below. The other will then take advantage of however I react.’
Yuri quickly ducked down and rolled around the side of the two before they had made contact. ‘A thrust, though powerful, makes them vulnerable from other directions.’ Knowing that much, Yuri took her chance to strike at the green haired woman. She rolled around so that she was facing the two from the side and then she quickly pushed off the ground. She began to dash towards the second woman, the one with green hair. Her target was now a bit ahead of her, so she began to look for a good point to strike. Noticing the woman’s legs, which were now clearly exposed from behind, she made her way over to strike at the woman’s knee.
Right as Yuri was about to strike, the green hair woman, using great dexterity, stopped herself on one foot and quickly came around to quick Yuri in the face. Noticing rather quickly, Yuri placed all her weight to the left. Her momentum allowed her to stay upright, but her distribution of weight forced her body to swerve to the left. The kick narrowly missed her, and the green haired woman was now vulnerable. Yuri attempted to grab her by the arm with the hope to pin her.
As Yuri attempted for the grab, the purple haired woman had already turned around and attempted to strike her with a left-sided punch. Yuri defended with the palm of one hand, but then the woman came from the other side. Upon defending with her other palm, the purple haired woman took advantage of her defense and tried to kick her. At the same time, the green haired woman brought her other leg around and tried to place a blow on Yuri’s back. Utilizing her amazing footwork, Yuri pushed herself upward and off the ground. She flipped over her opponent’s head, still holding the woman’s hands.
The purple haired woman tried to release her hands from Yuri’s grasp, but Yuri’s stronger grasp combined with the awkward position of her arms ((They were being pulled over to her back)) made it rather difficult. Right before she was able to pull free, the green haired woman’s leg came around and slammed into her gut. The purple haired woman would have fallen over due to the pain, but she was still in Yuri’s grasp. Yuri, who had her hands on the woman’s fist, took the moment to move her hands further up the woman’s arms. She intended to lock the woman’s arms in place and it seemed to work effectively.
The purple haired woman tried drastically to pull free from Yuri and the green haired woman tried to strike Yuri, even with her teammate in the way. Once it was clear that the fight was getting nowhere, beyond the purple haired woman being beaten by her teammate, Yuri took her foot and slammed it down on the back of the woman’s lower leg. This action assured Yuri that the woman’s one foot would remain in place as she forced the woman to turn towards her. She did this by quickly moving one hand to the woman’s side and pushing so that the woman would rotate and face her.
The purple haired woman didn’t expect that action out of Yuri, and before she could react, the green haired woman had placed a blow to her [purple haired woman’s] back. Taking advantage of another moment of weakness in the woman, Yuri once again brought her foot slamming down. The difference this time was that it wasn’t the back of the leg she was aiming for. She now came slamming on a rather weak section of the leg, the knee. Slamming down as hard as she did, Yuri heard a crack at the woman knee. She was certain that she had at least fraction the bone and possibly tore the ligaments. Yuri pushed the woman forward, using the momentum of the push to jump back in the other direction.
Yuri had thought that she could catch her breath, but immediately the green haired woman came charging at her. The two began to trade blows; the green haired woman would strike and Yuri was knock her fist to the side before attempting a punch of her own. Back and forth the two went, mostly dodging each other’s attacks. Yuri began to analyze the opponent before her and to read her movements. In moments she had gotten things down pact enough that she could predict where the green haired woman would strike. Finally she chose one moment and grabbed the woman’s arm. With the arm in her arms, she used all the momentum she could produce and sent the woman flying forward in a throw.
As the green haired woman flew back, the purple haired woman came running forward with another thrust. Yuri sidestepped the thrust and went to punch the woman in the stomach. As she did this, the other woman came running forward. The green woman’s thrust brought her behind Yuri, as Yuri went to defend the incoming attack of the other woman. The woman were now attacking Yuri from two sides. Utilizing what she practiced just days ago alongside her legwork, Yuri did her best to evade the strikes of the two. Their movements quickly became so predictable that she could take advantage of either fighter as she saw fit.
Yuri would grab the purple haired woman by the leg or hand and throw her in front of the blows of the other woman. She also parried the green haired woman’s attack and used her best tossing skills to send her flying. Regardless of the case, she took advantage of the time the counter gave her and overwhelmed the opponent in front of her. Left. Right. Block. Jump. Flip. Block. Left. Block. Throw. Defend. Counter. This was the process of her fight as she and her two opponents wore each other down.
The fight went on for at least an hour longer. Eventually the purple haired woman would have to abandon her teammate for her leg had begun to swollen severely. Once she was out, Yuri simply outmaneuvered the one she still fought. Eventually it got to the point that the two were so worn out that the difference in strength between them became apparent. Although tired, Yuri still remained able to read the woman’s attacks and throw them back at her. That gave her a severe advantage because the woman sustained more damage than she did herself. After the hour fight, it became imperative that they finish before the woman needed to be hospitalized.
The battle finished with Yuri declared the victor. The woman with the green hair presented Yuri with a nasty look, before she headed back to her barracks. “She doesn’t really like to lose.” The purple haired woman stated with a slight laugh before looking over her bruises, “That’s if you haven’t noticed.” Yuri asked her inquisitively, “Aren’t you mad that she was hitting you with her attack.” The purple haired woman looked up at her before displaying a large smile, “Maybe, a little, but I cannot be mad at her or even yourself for it. I was the one that chose to fight and as a member of squad 2 I acknowledge that every objective should be done to the fullest of my ability. She understood that when she attacked me, she was simply attempting to meet her objective. Anyway, I’ll let the Captain know the results of our fight, Take care.” The purple haired woman stated as she began to limp back to her barracks.
“Let me help you!” Yuri stated, feeling sorry about injuring the woman’s leg. The woman simply smiled and accepted Yuri’s assistance.
