*Large Pendulum moves back and forth across the screen*
Before we see the fruits of Sayurin’s labor, let’s take a trip back in time. Back to a time far better than the present, where the Gotei 13 need not worry about some major villain, captains haven’t betrayed Seireitei and left their work piling up for their subordinates the lower rank Shinigami’s (Like Sayurin) had smaller workloads due to lesser demands. Of course I’m talking about just a week or two prior to Aizen’s leave.
((OC: The time the training takes place doesn’t really impact anything, though instead of Hinamori approving the leave for training it would be Aizen… Also at this time Sayurin doesn’t have Senmidori’s last Shikai ability, Boryaku.))
Turn Back the Pendulum - Zanjutsu
The sun shines, in the evening sky, upon Seireitei. Across Seireitei each and every building is either completely bathed in light or covered by the shadows of the former. Unfortunately for Sayurin Momoiro, she was forced to stand in the light. It’s not that it bothered her, but it was too bright for her to concentrate primarily on her task at hand. It was also quickly becoming hotter the longer she stood in the sunshine. On this afternoon she had taken leave from duty, with Captain Aizen’s permission, in order to perform some training. She was now standing at the training grounds commonly used by Shinigami. The large area housed a massive number of tools used for various forms of training. She, herself, was using the training dummy that covered a small field in the area. Since earlier this day she has been practicing basic weapon combat on these dummy.
“Honestly, this isn’t very entertaining!” Sayurin stated as she continued to stab at the training dummy in front of her. Her weapon of choice was the dagger that was her zanpaktou’s sealed form. Swiftly and accurately she would push and pull the blade in and out of the dummy with no pattern for where she would hit on each go. The task was beyond brainless because she had no basis for adding in style. Of course she could add in a spin or twist, but she knew the short range of a dagger would leave such maneuvers to be risky in combat. “Then why don’t you make it more fun. Do a flip or something!” The voice came from the person that Yuri mostly blamed for this uninteresting training. Her problem with the current training was that a dagger was a rather uninteresting weapon. Her background a ninja, while she was living, had given her such knowledge of weaponry to know that, though daggers could be dazzling weapons, to attempt swordplay with a small weapon wasn’t the best idea in combat involving those far stronger than the dagger holder. She knew that the most effective use of a dagger was to deliver quick attacks wherever an opening was found and, well, dummy definitely had no way of defending themselves and so she found an opening everyone on its surface.
“Usually, with a dagger, you have another weapon to assist in creating opening and taking advantage of them,” Yuri stated basing what she said on the knowledge she acquired so long ago. “So, why don’t you get another weapon!?” Senmidori questioned of her master as if finding a weapon to pair with her dagger was such an easy task. Yuri would have to find a weapon that worked well with the dagger. She considered common pairs that included two daggers or similar weapons used to deliver quick and effective blows while still being able to defend with the easier to handle, smaller blade. A Daisho pairing also came to her mind. That is, a weapon pair that included one short katana and one long katana. Well, the short one could be replaced by any short weapon. The two weapons are generally chosen, in this pair, in such a matter that one will make up for the shortcomings of the other.
Sayurin reviewed the weapons she currently carried on her body. Upon her thigh she carried the sheath of her zanpaktou, too short to be used as a makeshift weapon. In her hand was the sealed zanpaktou being used to gouge the small training dummy. The pouch found just over her breast contained roughly ten shuriken. Finally, it was the last weapon, the Tanto found in her sleeve, that gave her an idea.
She took out the tanto and placed it in her left hand. “Let’s see if this is more entertaining,” she said with a grin on her face as she began to strike at the dummy with both blades. She’d strike with one; pull back, strike with the other and then pull back begin starting over. Once she got a feel for it she began hitting quicker and harder with both blades. Eventually she would place spins and tricks in her rotation. With just the dagger she knew she could be attacked while performing a flashy move, but with another weapon she could simply defend with it as she went for the attack and then strike with the free blade. The result would be a far more fast-pace and wild fighting style. Now her rotation was something like; Strike with the tanto, push forward with the dagger, pull the dagger back and twist the body so as to agile move behind the dummy and deliver a strike to the back. Even against a training dummy, her fighting style could be seen as nothing less than ruthless as it was clear she was aiming for various vital areas found on the usual body.
After a while of striking the training dummy, she stopped for a moment. The tanto she was holding was thrown towards the nearby ground so it would stay in place. “Disappear in the wind, Senmidori Tenshi,” She suddenly said to the surprise of Senmidori. “What are you doing now?” The childish asked, curious of the strange action. “Well, while I was training I asked myself why I never thought of doing this before. It just finally occurred to me that the answer to that question should be that I have always trained like that because your shikai uses two Chakram. Though I usually only use them as range weapons, they also are made to be used for hand to hand and so I should practice like that.” She continued her training like before, but with the Chakram replacing the dagger and Tanto pair. She trained like this for another hour before moving on with her training.
Turn Back the Pendulum - Sho
From the pouch on her breast, Sayurin pulled out a small piece of paper. On it she had listed various Kido that she had begun training with. The ones that she had learned were marked with a blue circle while the ones she only memorized the incantation or effect of had red marks. There were few spells on the list that were marked with blue, but she did memorize a very large number of them with the hope of eventually learning to use them effectively. With the paper out she looked to the first spell listed, Hado 1: Sho.
“This will be way too easy…,” She said as she read over the few details that were involved in the use of the spell, in disbelief. With the slip of paper in her left hand, she took her right and pointed it towards the practice dummy. She remembered the force of Reiatsu that left her hand when using spells like Hado 31. Yuri figured that this spell used something similar, but while only sending out energy instead of the flame associated with number 31. “Hado 1.. Sho!” She stated as a force fired from her hand towards the dummy, pushing it as far back as it could go while chained to the pole under it. “That looks right; it pushed it back,” While saying this she moved over to the side of the dummy to see if it marked the pole while being shoved back. Her curiosity returned the finding of cracked wood where the chain attached to the wooden, pole base.
Turn Back the Pendulum – Hainawa
“Next is Bakudo 4: Hainawa; this one doesn’t seem as easy as the first,” this time she read more thoroughly so she would not make any mistakes when performing the spell. ‘This one is all about control!’ she thought as she walked a couple more feet away from the brutally beaten practice dummy. With the distance made, she took her right hand and placed it, pointing upwards, next to her left shoulders. “Bakudo 4: Hainawa!” She stated as she went to move her hand with the expectation that the spell had worded; it didn’t. She felt a force move from her finger tip, but there wasn’t a rope of energy to be seen.
“Maybe I didn’t focus enough on control?” She asked herself as she re-examined the text on the piece of paper. “Place your hand like this,” She read as she placed her hand in the position shown next to the spell directions. ‘Luckily I made sure to draw the diagrams.’ She did well with her artistic talents and so the diagrams all looked professionally done. “Upon stating the incantation, take your finger and use it to … send the rope flying,” She continued onto read, she pause a result of her need to further unfold the paper to see the whole description.
She placed her hand in the same position as before, with her right hand next to her left shoulder. “Bakudo 4: Hainawa!” Yuri focused on her reiatsu flowing towards her fingers in her right hand. Once she felt that it had flowed where she was hoping, she took her fingers and thrust them back and towards.. The rope flew out from her finger, but she pulled back and when she went to send it flying forward, she hit herself with it. The energy rope flew behind her, hitting her ankle and when she tried to send it sailing forward, she flipped herself onto her face. “Hehehe!” She heard Senmidori laugh afterwards. “That wasn’t funny!” She yelled at the immature spirit. “It wasn’t funny… It was hilarious! Hehehe!” Senmidori continued to laugh without restraint.
Sayurin got back onto her feet and tried the spell again. She knew that she got the spell correct, she made the rope and it did its job of binding something. The problem was that the spell wasn’t intended to amuse a childish zanpaktou, rather it was supposed to bind the arms of a target. She brought her right hand back up, “Bakudo 4: Hainawa!” She yelled as she pulled her hand back, this time she didn’t bring it as far back and threw in a spin to the motion as if she was twirling a lasso. With the rope under control, she sent it flying towards the training dummy. Once the rope had latched onto the dummy, she made sure to test its strength to find that it was rather strong. Following this success she practiced the spell about four more times to make sure she had it under control before moving onto learning another Kido.
Turn Back the Pendulum – Sekienton
Once again, Yuri had the slip of paper in her hand. Rather than continuing down the list, as she was, she decided to read through the Kido and choose one. She came to one on the back of the slip. “Been a while since I used a smoke bomb, and Kyakujutsu doesn’t involve them,” she said to herself as she read the description for Bakudo 21: Sekienton. “But you have a flash bomb, aren’t they the same!?” Senmidori questioned, upset the Sayurin was looking down on one of her abilities. “They’re similar, but they also have different strengths. Flash bombs are usually meant for blinding someone before taking advantage of their being blind, while smoke bombs are used for running away. You can protect yourself from a flash bomb, but smoke bombs aren’t so easy to see in."
For a technique that doesn’t interact with others, Sayurin walked away from the training dummy area and chose a spot with a lot of room. “Come to think of it, I remember back at the academy when students messed up on Hado 31, it would end in an explosion. Maybe this would be similar?” In her mind ran the images of other students failing to control their reiatsu while performing the technique, blowing themselves up in the process. Yuri never experienced such a scenario for she was quick to learn the spell and so she doesn’t know how to duplicate the effect of letting it explode. She still knew that letting a spell explode should be easier than controlling it.
She bent her legs and placed both hands, palms forward, in front of her. She focused Reiatsu towards her palms and once she felt ready, she performed the spell, “Bakudo 21: Sekienton!” Upon finishing the name, Sayurin took note of two problems. The first involves the size; Yuri felt the energy release out of her palms and saw the smoke shoot forth, but the volume of the smoke was far smaller than she imagined. The cloud of smoke was so small that Yuri questioned whether it could cover a limb. The second problem was the color; the cloud was supposed to be red, but this cloud was a shade of greenish blue.
Without thinking too much about it, she prepared to try the spell again. This time she prepared to put more energy into the cast. Her legs slightly bent and her palms up, Sayurin focused on her Reiatsu flow. She tried to quicken the flow from before while also increasing the amount. After a couple seconds of analyzing her Reiatsu flow, she tried the spell. “Bakudo 21: Sekienton!... Bakudo 21: Sekienton!” She repeated the spell twice; the second time after noticing the first was not big enough. She kept going, though, casting the spell over and over again. One cast the explosion would be small with a green cloud, next it would be bigger with a blue cloud, then it was smaller again with a purple cloud, bigger with a greenish blue cloud and finally stopped; there was now a rather large cloud, but with a tealish color cloud. She repeated what she had just done; the flow of Reiatsu and the release. She did it at least a half-dozen times and became overwhelmed by the smoke. The color never changed, but she got the size down to a science. “Personally, I don’t really like red; I can stick with this color,” Sayurin said, not worried too much about the color while she was able to extract the basic effect. “Make it green again! Or.. or Pink! Make it pink!!” Unlike her master, Senmidori was noticeably concerned with the colors Yuri could produce.
