Training Day One - Prologue
It was morning one day, early enough that it was still rather dark, but bright enough that a light fixture was not necessary to walk around. The sun had just recently gotten to the point where it could be seen, if just slightly, above the great fortifications that separates the massive city, Seireitei, from the rest of Soul Society. Normally, for most cultures, this time of day would be one for sleep, but in this place there is a need for work around the clock and thus it’s a lot noisier than an individual would like.
The most noticeable split in the silence would be the sound of footsteps, created by a young Shinigami girl. Unlike the majority of people that were up at this time, she was not out here to work, but rather, to train. Having completed her day’s work yesterday and having no additional assignments today or tomorrow, Sayurin Momoiro, or Yuri as she preferred to be called, had gotten permission to take the next two days off with the condition that she would train throughout those two days. Now she walks away from the Squad 5 Barracks, where she lives and works, towards the Training Area.
On the majority of occasions, the girl would be found with her long, dark blue hair down with a possible ponytail at the back. She’d have on the Shinigami Uniform, though omitting the Hakama creating a dress like effect, with a white sash to hold the top together. She’d have brown running shoes (Rather than the sandals that most Shinigami are associated with) and her zanpaktou, Senmidori Tenshi, strapped to her thigh.
This morning, dancing in the brief light provided by the growing Sun was a girl that looked similar, but her attire was definitely changed. On this morning, Yuri left the barracks wearing a different top, though still an edited version of the Shinigami Uniform. The sleeves were removed from the outfit, the neck was extended down a little to show more neck, and the bottom of the top was shorter than usual. The hakama was still omitted, so her attire definitely showed more leg than usual. Her usual leg wear was replaced with white stockings and the originally missing sandals. The flap of the top was sewn shut making a belt or sash unnecessary. Senmidori’s position on her thigh had not changed.
Her training outfit was specifically designed to allow more air on her body, not only to keep her body cool, but also to make using Senmidori’s abilities easier (It’s easier for her to manipulate wind particles on the skin, than on fabric over the skin). As she walked to the training area, the look was further transformed from Yuri’s usual by her action of tying her hair back into a two ponytails.
After a 30 minute walk, she had arrived at the training area. Her next task was to find a secluded spot. The organized person she was, Yuri prepared a schedule for her training today. She organized the two days each into four parts and she intended to train in a different area [Of Shinigami Proficiencies] for each part both days.
Training Day One, Part One: Reiatsu Training, 5am - 8am

[OC: From here on out; things Yuri says will be "Yellow", thoughts will be 'Pink' and what Senmidori says will be "Green"!]
Yuri found a rather quiet spot deep in the woods of the training grounds. She found a stump that was clean chopped at a height that was perfect for her to sit on. “Perfect!” She said ecstatically upon seeing the place to sit. She promptly sat upon the convenient structure and started her training. “Okay, we’ll start with some Reiatsu training then.” With that said, she positioned her body on the stump in such a way as to not strain any of her muscles. Her goal was to completely relax her body so that she can become completely aware of it. It took some effort to position everything perfectly, but her small size made it a lot easier. It also helps that she has done this many times in the past. Though, in the past she didn’t have as much time to dedicate to Reiatsu training due to work and helping others.
Once she had completely relaxed her body, she began the next part of the training exercise. ‘Before I do anything, I’ll take note of my Reiatsu flow.’ She kept her eyes closed and focused on trying to map out where her Reiatsu was moving. She tried to complete this part of the exercise as soon as possible, but due to the relaxation condition of it, it was proving to be difficult. ‘I need to be able to do this quickly on the battle field.’ Even thinking that, she surprised herself when she found she completed the task in an awfully short time, just a couple minutes.
When Yuri was finished feeling for the flow of her Reiatsu, it was then time for her to initialize the bulk of the training. ‘To improve my Reiatsu control, I must be able to manipulate it in any way necessary. I also need to be able to restrict it when needed.’ She started with the task of gathering energy at her limbs. To her left hand, then to her right; to her left leg and to the right. She went through the process repeatedly, each time placing more Reiatsu. ‘Gotta be careful with this, too much and I could do some harm.’ With that thought, she focused more on constraining the flow.
Once she had enough of that, she started upon a larger-scale version of that exercise. ‘Just like the first exercise, but now to send it all out.’ By that she meant that she was going to release her Reiatsu as much as she can before managing it back down to its normal level. She continued the actions, expanding her Reiatsu and then deflating it. Each time she tried to increase the speed while keeping the rate constant. Once she felt she had done this exercise enough, she went back to the last one.
‘That should’ve been four tries each.’ The eight rounds took a bit over an hour and a half to complete. “One more exercise and then I’ll take a break before the next training.” She said to herself – it gave her something to look forward for, making the task seem easier. “Uhm… huh” “Senmidori, you awake?” Yuri asked in response to hearing the confused spirit’s voice. “Yea… where are you?” Unknown to Yuri, Senmidori was walking around the clearing, in a state that was above being from a inner world, but was not materialized enough for her own owner to notice her. “It’s the training grounds, deep in the forest. It’s still a bit early though, so it is kinda dark.” Yuri told the voice.
She found Senmidori’s awakening to be of benefit to her and her training now. “Now that you’re up, help me with my Reiatsu training.” She said with a smirk, though with no clue as to which direction to show it. With the after-effects of sleep clear in her voice, Senmidori Tenshi responded in her childish voice, “’Kay.” “Disappear in the Wind (Kaze kakureru), Senmidori Tenshi!” Upon saying those words, she grabbed the dagger from its sheath at her thigh. Her right hand held the blade horizontal and her left moved across the blades surface. The dagger glowed a light green color and after her left hand moved passed the blades point, the glowing dagger appeared to separate and form into two circles. Yuri was now holding the two Chakram that Senmidori Tenshi’s Shikai involves.
“What do you plan to do?” The childish voice said. “Well, Boryaku needs energy to make the Chakram return to me once thrown, right?” She questioned her Zanpaktou, unsure of where to throw her voice. “I guess?” The younger girl answered with little certainty in her voice. Yuri noticed that Senmidori seemed a bit tired – she was far more used to the bubbly, childish personality the girl presented then the tired, apathetic one she had now.”Hm.. Well, Kyakujutsu also uses energy to detonate the Chakram. So I’m gonna try to focus energy into the Chakram as they fly. Maybe they can go farther, or the explosions can be made larger.” With that said, she threw the Chakram in her left hand, the one with the teal center.
After throwing it, she did what she said and began trying to focus energy into the Chakram from a difference. Once it returned, she threw it again. Yuri made sure to watch for any changes in distance. After a dozen throws with each Chakram, she decided to test her second theory. Upon throwing the Chakram associated with Kyakujutsu’s explosions, she attempted to send energy to it. Once it reached its max distance before turning around, she detonated it. The explosion wasn’t that much larger, but it was somewhat larger than usual. “We'll, test this more later. Time for Breakfast”
Down near the stump was a basket she brought with her to the site, containing food for all three meals of the day. As she went to grab it she noticed two things. The sun was now noticeable in the sky and there was now plenty of light covering the area. She predicted that it was around nine or ten. The other thing she noticed was the return of Senmidori’s usual personality. “Breakfast!” She shouted with a girlish giggle, running towards the basket – though Yuri wouldn’t know where she was standing. “You know you can’t eat breakfast.” With that, Yuri took an hour long break before starting the next scheduled exercise.

Training Day One, Part Two: Hoho Training, 9am - 2pm 2009 Words
After returning from her break, Sayurin quickly went into the next part of her training. She had just completed some mental and spiritual training, so she found it appropriate to get some physical training done.
She placed the basket containing her food next to the stump again. Compared to her earlier training in the day, she now stood in a brightly lit clearing in the woods. Though the Sun could barely be seen, it was high enough to illuminate the small region she was in. Yuri stood on the stump and looked over the changed scene. Her violet eyes scanned the region; the trees, the grass, the sky and the underbrush. “Hoho training should do, about now.” She said with a smile as she brought up her arms to stretch.
Yuri walked around the stump, studying the grass covering the clearing. The grass wasn’t that special, but she wanted to find the right spot. “Here should do.” She stated. With her back to the stump and opposite side to the basket, she sat down. “What do you intend to do?” Her curious zanpaktou asked. “Well, first I’m going to stretch. Wouldn’t be good returning after two days with an injury.” Yuri answered, before laying her lags out flat, side-by-side.
She started by attempting to touch her toes. After much training in the past, the task was no trouble. Her flexible body also attributed to the simplicity of the action. “After this I’ll do some running to get my body prepared. Then.. hm.. I guess it wouldn’t be Hoho training without shunpo exercises.” As she said that, she bent each of her legs in various ways to assure her muscles are prepared for use.
After about five minutes of various stretches, she started the first real part of her Hoho training. She got up from her sitting position, making sure to brush off any dirt on her clothing. Then, once again, she looked over the surrounding area with her large violet eyes. “Over there leads back to the main training area.” She pointed back in the direction she came from earlier. “So, over there must lead further into the woods.” Her finger moved to point in the opposite direction. “How do you know that!? It could just lead to the wall.” The young zanpaktou pointed out. She was referring to the wall that separated Seireitei from Rukongai.
“No, these woods are pretty long; I should have at least a couple miles before I reach it. When I do, I’ll just turn around and head back here.” She said with confidence as she considered the best way to cover the distance. ‘Do I push right to my limit, or do I keep a good pace? Would I be able to move through the underbrush quick enough if I don’t go fast enough?’ She questioned herself. “What do you think, Senmidori? How should I go about this?” Her question excited the little girl. Senmidori liked nothing more than helping her master, and so she answered in a way expected of a child. “You should make it a game!” She said cheerfully.
At first Sayurin wasn’t too keen on the idea, but she did consider the possibilities. ‘It could be fun… and it could make the training more beneficial.’ “What do you suggest?” Sayurin asked the girl before formulating an idea herself. “Um... we could play tag!” Senmidori answered with such enthusiasm it was hard for Sayurin to say what she had to say. “That would work.. if you could manifest.. but you can’t.” That answer was hard on Senmidori. Not because it was true, Sayurin couldn’t see her, but because she knew something her master didn’t, that she could somewhat manifest. She could walk a distance from her master outside the Inner World. The problem was that it was her master that needs to improve so that she’d be seen. She laughed, but Sayurin thought nothing of it.
“I’ll run to the wall by ground.” She began verbalize the thought that just ran through her head. She pulled out the dagger sheathed on her left thigh with her right hand. “Disappear in the wind, Senmidori Tenshi,” she called as she moved her left hand across the dagger’s blade. The blade began to glow as the hand brushed its surface. Upon passing the tip of the blade, the dagger divided into two circles; two chakram. “I’ll use your Chakrams and Kyakujutsu as I run to the wall. Maybe hitting rocks and cutting underbrush, which I pass. And then?.. I’ll Shunpo back! I’ll still use the chakram and kyakujutsu, but I’ll jump from tree to tree. So it will be more difficult.” She said, determined to meet her own conditions.
“Aren’t you afraid of heights?” Sayurin knew, even though she couldn’t see the spirit, that the child was laughing at her for such a fault. “I’m not that afraid.” She said sternly. “The trees aren’t that high.” She then looked up to the branches above her, just noticing how high they were. “Well… if I’m training I might not think about it..” She said with a hint of hesitation.
“Anyhow, gotta get started.” With that she turned towards the track she set up. “You can do the countdown.” “Okay!... 10!.. 9!… um… 8!… 6..! no wait I mean 7!..” That mess up made Sayurin give up on waiting as she finished the count herself, “3, 2, 1, Go!” She ran down the path. The first obstacle she ran into was a rather long bush blocking her path. She took both zanpaktou and threw them at it. The distance between her and the bush still seemed small and so upon the teal-centered chakram hitting the bush, she used Kyakujutsu detonate. Her experiment from her Reiatsu training still fresh in her mind, she did remember to try sending energy over to the chakram before detonating it. She wanted to take note of any differences, but she didn’t want to stop her pace and so proceeded up the path. The next thing she saw were a group of rocks. The two chakram returned back just in time and as they flew into her hands, she quickly released them towards the new targets.
The Chakram hit and cracked the rocks and returned to her. More bushes got in her way, but she took care of them similarly to the first patch. As she went to throw the chakram this time, however, she noticed some rocks too. The chakram flew from her hands at the bushes. She decided on another method of hitting her targets, “Ye lord! Mask of blood and flesh, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! Inferno and Pandemonium, the sea barrier surges, march on to the south!, Hadou 31: Shakkaho!” With the completion of the command came a ball of fire flying out of her right hand. Instead of watching whether the Hadou hit, she turned back to the Chakram and ignited the explosive one.
She continued on using Kidou, her chakram and Kyakujutsu to blow up the designated targets; rocks and bushes. In time she reached the edge of Seireitei that she set as her first goal post. “Okay, now for something more difficult.” She tried to quickly catch her breath before turning back towards her camp. She looked around the trees in front of her. She wanted to find a good branch to start on, without thinking of how high up they were. “There’s a good one!” She said as she jumped. Once her feet made contact with the tree, she promptly Shunpoed to the next. Unlike the first part of the course, she didn’t aim straight to her current goal. Yuri knew that if she did, she’d arrive way to quick. Instead she was going to shunpo in figure-eight up to the target. After three shunpos, she threw her Chakram at some branches. Then she faced the other direction and quickly chanted, “Ye lord! Mask of blood and flesh, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! Inferno and Pandemonium, the sea barrier surges, march on to the south!, Hadou 31: Shakkaho!” Once again a fireball released straight from her right hand, taking out the tree that was unfortunately in the way. She turned and unleashed Kyakujutsu as well. She made sure that no matter what skills she used, the one constant was that she’d only change location if she Shunpoed to the new location. This continued until she found herself back at the camp. Once there she turned back and ran towards the wall again.
After about two hours of repeating the two courses, obviously reducing the amount of skills used in the process so that she would not use up all her energy, she went on to the final part of the training, at least the Hoho training. She was once again standing on the stump, which did no good to remedy her small height. “Okay, now to practice air walking.” “You mean you’re going to fly!?” Senmidori quickly asked. “No, I’m just going to practice solidifying my Reiatsu in the surrounding air to keep myself from falling.” “Which is flying?” The younger girl firmly stated. “No, it’s air walking.” “Flying.” “Air walking.” “If you’re in the air without falling, you’re flying.” This back and forth began to irritate Sayurin. “Fine, it’s flying!” Senmidori laughed with satisfaction at hearing her master state that.
“Okay, I just need to make the air under my feet solid enough to stop myself from falling.” With that she walked horizontally off the stump.. and fell. Right before hitting the ground she felt some resistance, like the air was trying to stop her drop. “Okay, just need to practice it a bit.” She was aware of her small progress and prepared to improve upon it. Then from behind her, she could hear a whisper, “Shi-no-bi-ir-I” At first Yuri thought Senmidori was playing around, but when she thought about it she realized what her zanpaktou was getting at. Senmidori Tenshi’s Shinobi-iri used Reiatsu to manipulate the air around her body to reflect light and block out smells and sounds. The overall effect didn’t help at all, but the idea behind it did. To use that ability, she had to manipulate air in a much similar way to the ability she was now trying to learn. She placed her chakram one over the other and perpendicular, and stated the abilities name, “Shinobi-iri!” As the invisibility effect took effect, she noted the movement of the air. She then removed the effect and tried it again and again and again, until she felt she understood the flow affectively.
After about an hour, she felt confident enough to try the air walking again. She stepped off the stump and, just like last time, she felt resistance. This time the resistance felt a lot different; she could feel her body coming almost to a complete stop before her feet hit the ground. She prepared to try it again, but instead of stepping from the stump, she swallowed her fear and made her way up to a branch. She jumped from it and tried to step herself again. Rather than feeling like she was falling, she felt she was sliding down a steep hill. So, she tried again. A little less than two hours flew by and she seemed to have gotten it somewhat proficiently. She didn’t fall like she was and she could run and jump on the air, as long as she kept concentrating. She could shunpo on air, but would end up at a lower elevation because she wasn’t yet fast enough to react.
“That’s good enough for now.” Yuri stated, satisfied at how much she had accomplished in the last couple hours. She knew that her new ability would surprise even her squad members later on. Still, she was tired and so decided to take another break – this time for lunch. She returned to the basket and pulled out the bento box she had prepared and proceeded to eat while chatting with Senmidori.
Training Day One, Part Three: Kido Training, 3pm - 9pm
Kido Training Part One, Midorikaze Danmaku, 1,382 Words
Yuri placed the basket of food back next to the stump that has become its temporary home. Looking at her body, at this point, it was clear that the training was beginning to tire her out, but her determination was also noticeable.
“Now time for the Kido portion of today’s training,” Yuri stated. From the pouch located just over her breast, she pulled out an old piece of paper.
To her the paper was rather familiar for it listed Kido she intended to learn. Inscribed on the small sheet were the incantations and instructions for each Kido and in her free time she had tried to at least memorize the words. For each spell she intended to learn on the list, she had practiced at least once in the past, but she never had this much time to spare for training and thus never succeeded in mastering the listed Kido. The paper listed many spells and had markings as to where she stood with the inferred Kido. For example, the Bakudo Kyokko was marked with a blue circle to symbolize that she had experience enough with it to use the spell proficiently. For the Hado Tenran, there was a red strike next to the name. This marking was intended to mean that she had memorized the incantation.
With the slip of paper out, she prepared to learn the first spell her eyes gazed upon. “Midorikaze Danmaku it is!” She exclaimed as her eyes looked over the spell. Her finger moved up to her bottom lip to suggest a thinking pose, “Hm.. I remember trying to learn this spell; I managed to get the first sphere to appear. I have to work on dividing it. Now what should I practice on.” She now asked as she looked at her surrounding area. She looked over each of the nearby trees and chose the sturdiest one, “That one will have to do.”
She walked a good distance from the tree, about thirty feet. Her hand brought the sheet of paper up to the level of her eyes so she could look over the instructions. “Once I finish the incantation I have to focus energy into an object and slice the wind in a specific way, so as to produce two balls of wind. Easy enough!” She released Senmidori Tenshi into her Shikai and immediately started upon the incantation, "Ol' Green Serpeant Who Descends From Heaven, Gales Erode Thy Pale Skin, and Breezes Replenish Thy Grieving Soul! Take the Wind and Slice It With Your Own Two Hands; One Aimed North, the Other South!" Once she completed the spell she took one of Senmidori’s Chakram and swiftly brought it from her left side to her right side; To her dismay, she didn’t get the expected result. As the Chakram passed through the air, wind channeled around a point opposite to Yuri’s hand holding the Chakram. The wind slowly grew as air thrashed about and Reiatsu was used to grasp it. The swirling wind grew as the Chakram moved, from start to finish, but once the blade hit the end of the intended path the wind did not split as it was supposed to. Rather than dividing into two spheres, it remained as one sphere of thrashing wind trying to break from its Reiatsu shell. Within seconds following its creation, the sphere of wind began to deflate for reasons currently unknown to Sayurin.
“You did it wrong.” Her zanpaktou quickly pointed out the obvious fact. “Thank you, Miss Obvious. Would you like to suggest how to make it right?” Yuri asked the younger girl, not completely expecting a useful answer. “You got to go from shoulder to shoulder,” Senmidori tried to motion how she felt it was to be done correctly, but once again, Sayurin wouldn’t have been able to see it. Yuri rose the Chakram up to her left shoulder again and stated the incantation, "Ol' Green Serpeant Who Descends From Heaven, Gales Erode Thy Pale Skin, and Breezes Replenish Thy Grieving Soul! Take the Wind and Slice It With Your Own Two Hands; One Aimed North, the Other South!" She moved the Chakram to her right shoulder. “You gotta keep it from dropping as you move it! Your moving it too quickly too!” The girl blurted out to her master what she had observed. “It didn’t drop; and I kept the speed constant!” Her master retorted. “Did not!” “Did to!” “Did not, not, not!” This spat went on only for two to three minutes. “Who died and made you the Kido master!?” Yuri yelled at her zanpaktou. “Not a Kido master, but I am a WIND zanpaktou and it’s a WIND kido, but now I won’t help you!” Surprisingly to Yuri, that logic made a whole lot of sense, even if it was coming from the younger girl.
Yuri knew if she didn’t say anything, her immature zanpaktou wasn’t going to help her with her training. She felt bad now, knowing that Senmidori was just trying to help and even had helped her improve her training throughout each activity she had done. She knew she wouldn’t have been able to manipulate the wind so well for her Hoho training without… ‘Wait! Manipulating the wind, that’s it!.. but I need Senmidori for that..' Yuri could easily apologize to Senmidori Tenshi right then and there. She knew it wasn’t the first time she admitted Senmidori was right, but the case wasn’t about it being Senmidori. Yuri didn’t want to admit someone she felt was younger, more immature than her, was actually the more rational one at the time. She fought with herself as to what to say to her partner, but after minutes of thinking it through, she was interrupted by a strange feeling, a familiar feeling.
It was Senmidori Tenshi’s most recent ability, Boryaku. The effects of the ability were obvious to Yuri, how couldn’t they be when Yuri felt like she suddenly covered in concrete. Senmidori Tenshi had activated the ability, an ability that was only under her control which, well, gave control to her. By manipulating the wind around Yuri’s body, Senmidori Tenshi could manipulate her body against her will. Luckily for Yuri, she trusted her zanpaktou enough while it was using this ability.
Yuri wasn’t expecting what was to happen next, for suddenly her body began to move. She was on the tips of her toes with her arms pointed into the air and she was spinning. It only took her a moment to realize that she was dancing, ballet to be exact. “Senmidori, I don’t have time for this! If you’re gonna help me then..” She was interrupted as Senmidori responded, “Noone said that I was doing this for you!” The comment infuriated Yuri. “What do you mean by that!? If you’re not going to help me, then give me my body back!” Her body continued to dance. “Nope, you agreed to play with me when we met, but now if you’re gonna be mean, I’ll turn you into my dolly so that the agreement stands!” Yuri wasn’t sure if she was serious, but she knew what she had to do, “Senmidori, I’m sorry! You wanted to help, but.. well.. you’ve helped a lot today and I shouldn’t have ignored your advice!” Her body stopped dancing. “Hm.. I don’t know..” Senmidori said in such a way to make it obvious she wanted something more. Yuri made a desperate proposal, “I’ll tie my hair back.. in a girly fashion for a week.” She knew her zanpaktou’s spirit enough to know such a childish proposition would do and it did. “Deal!” Senmidori answered, excited. Yuri’s body, however, began to move against her will again, but this time the movement was limited to her one arm moving up to her shoulder. “Move the Chakram through the air like this,” Senmidori stated as she performed the motion. She proceeded to do it over and over again over the course of thirty minutes.
Once Yuri was confident enough, Boryaku was removed and Yuri tried the incantation again. "Ol' Green Serpeant Who Descends From Heaven, Gales Erode Thy Pale Skin, and Breezes Replenish Thy Grieving Soul! Take the Wind and Slice It With Your Own Two Hands; One Aimed North, the Other South!" She said as she performed the practiced motions, this time which resulted in the two expected spheres. “Hurray!” Yuri yelled happily as she noticed the two perfectly shaped spheres almost sticking to her Chakram. Moments later she sent the two spheres flying at the tree. Over the course of the next hour she practiced creating the spheres and sending them flying at the trees. By the time she was done, she decided that another tree was necessary in the next part of her Kido training.

Kido Training Part Two, Shirokazewari, 1,092 Words
In no time, Yuri was working on learning another Kido from her list. Rather than relying on her gaze to decide which one to learn, this time she simply chose the next one listed after Midorikaze Danmaku. “Shirokazewari is the next one on the list. Wow, the incantation is a lot like the last one’s.” She was aware of two Kido on her list having the same incantation as the first one, but she didn’t recall putting them in order on the list like that. “It’s similar too,” Senmidori mentioned.
The tree the previous Kido was practiced on had been knocked over by the repeated blasts to its trunk and so Yuri had chosen another tree, one to the left of the last one. “Hm.. so it’s like the last one, but instead of creating the orbs on the Chakram, I have to point out where they’ll appear.” Yuri analyzed the instruction to assure that she understood them. As has been stated, she tried the spell in the past, but the first time she tried it before trying Midorikaze Danmaku. She felt that she could easily learn it now that she learned that other spell.
“Let’s give this a try. Ol' Green Serpeant Who Descends From Heaven, Gales Erode Thy Pale Skin, and Breezes Replenish Thy Grieving Soul! Within the Calm a Beast is Born, Tempt It With Your Lies So It Will Show You Its Fangs!" While she worded the chant, she pointed to two spots in the air near the tree; the one spot up above to the right relative to where she was standing and the other lower and to the left. She tried her best to let energy flow to the targeted destination, but found that nothing appeared. “You were close.” Her side-kick mentioned. “How was that close, I got nothing.” Yuri pointed out sternly. “That’s because you’re not paying attention. Your energy reached a destination; you just didn’t grab the wind.” Once again, Yuri was annoyed to find her zanpaktou outsmarting her. She wasn’t sure what was up with Senmidori, but she noticed a sudden maturity in the girl. ‘It could just be that I haven’t tried training this long with her before.’ She convinced herself. “Kay, lets try this again. . Ol' Green Serpeant Who Descends From Heaven, Gales Erode Thy Pale Skin, and Breezes Replenish Thy Grieving Soul! Within the Calm a Beast is Born, Tempt It With Your Lies So It Will Show You Its Fangs!" She positioned the Chakram the same as she did the chant, pointing to the two locations she wanted the blades to appear at. Wind was noticeably being channeled at the locations, but it wasn’t forming into blades. “Form it! You should know how, it’s been the theme of the day almost!” Yuri almost laughed at hearing because she knew it was true, her training today revolved around manipulating wind in various ways.
“Ol' Green Serpeant Who Descends From Heaven, Gales Erode Thy Pale Skin, and Breezes Replenish Thy Grieving Soul! Within the Calm a Beast is Born, Tempt It With Your Lies So It Will Show You Its Fangs!" She stated again, this time resulting in small whirlwinds near where she wanted the blades to appear. “Huh?” Yuri looked close at the two whirlwinds to find that, “They aren’t even where I want them!” The whirlwinds may have seemed to be in the right place from her perspective, but upon closer inspection, she noticed that they were a dozen feet further than she intended. “You can do it!” Senmidori cheered her on. “Ol' Green Serpeant Who Descends From Heaven, Gales Erode Thy Pale Skin, and Breezes Replenish Thy Grieving Soul! Within the Calm a Beast is Born, Tempt It With Your Lies So It Will Show You Its Fangs!" The whirlwinds were shifted to the left. “Ol' Green Serpeant Who Descends From Heaven, Gales Erode Thy Pale Skin, and Breezes Replenish Thy Grieving Soul! Within the Calm a Beast is Born, Tempt It With Your Lies So It Will Show You Its Fangs!" The whirlwinds were lopsided.
She tried many times to not only get the bladed shape right, but also to get the positioning right. “Ol' Green Serpeant Who Descends From Heaven, Gales Erode Thy Pale Skin, and Breezes Replenish Thy Grieving Soul! Within the Calm a Beast is Born, Tempt It With Your Lies So It Will Show You Its Fangs!" There it was, a blade at least on one of the points. After about an hour, that’s where she was, one blade positioned correctly with the other replaced by a whirlwind just slightly off its destination. “Well, I got one down, I just need to get this other one right.. While keeping this one right.” Yuri thought over the situation before her. Mentally she pictured where each blade should be and what they should look like. ‘I need to repeat what I did, but on both sides. What if..’ She looked down at the Chakram she was using to define where the blades would appear. ‘What if the reason that one there is off is because I’m not using a typical blade.’
She had an idea and just like her other ideas on that day, she went through the execution of this one without question. “Ol' Green Serpeant Who Descends From Heaven, Gales Erode Thy Pale Skin, and Breezes Replenish Thy Grieving Soul! Within the Calm a Beast is Born, Tempt It With Your Lies So It Will Show You Its Fangs!" This time, instead of pointing with one Chakram at both locations, she pointed at each location with each Chakram. Just as she expected, both blades were formed perfectly and after some analysis, were in the correct positions. Now that she had the basics of the ability down, she went on to practice it for the next hour. She’d produce the two blades and then slash at the tree with both chakram. In the case of a normal person using the Kido, they would have to slash with their single weapon and/or object twice to send both blades flying, but each blade is controlled by a separate Chakram in the case of multiple weapons and thus she had to swing with both. The target was the tree that was originally designated, but an hours’ worth of casting the spell brought the end to about half a dozen trees in the process. Once the hour was up, she felt confident enough in her ability to move on to the third Kido she planned to learn that day.
Kido Training Part Three, Midorikaze Kabe, 1,019 Words
“This will be easy!” Yuri indicated. She was now looking over the next Kido on the list and it was of a similar incantation to the two previous ones. Of course it made sense because the name is just short from being the same to Midorikaze Danku. “I think it’s like Hado 31 and Hado 33; the incantations are similar and the name are similar, but the effects differ.” Yuri theorized the obvious, or at least near obvious. The biggest mistake Yuri was now making was that she has convinced herself that Kabe will be to Danku as Sokatsui is to Shakkaho, though really it’s more like Soren Sokatsui to Sokatsui. The approach of the weaker spell is similar to the stronger one, but effects differ.
“The instructions seem to resemble those for Danku, for the initial step that is.” Yuri stated as she was looking over the instructions. “Doesn’t mean they’ll be the same.” Senmidori pointed out, much against her normal character. “We’ll see,” Yuri was prepared to try the spell. "Ol' Green Serpeant Who Descends From Heaven, Gales Erode Thy Pale Skin, and Breezes Replenish Thy Grieving Soul! The Forces Charge to Face The Foe Only to Turn; To Defend The West Wall!" She then repeated the motion that she had become accustomed to while practicing the first spell. She swung her Chakram from her left shoulder to her right. She expected to see a nice gust of wind fly from the blade, but instead there was a chaotic movement of wind that began to accelerate upon being created from the Chakram. Within just a couple of seconds the wind accelerated fast enough to knock Yuri back into the tree 10 feet behind her, before dispersing to her relief.
“That definitely didn’t go as well as I thought it would.” She pointed out the obvious to whoever may be listening. “I did say they might not be the same.” Senmidori again pointed out to her master. “Yeah, but you never suggested that I would be making such destructive movements of air if I didn’t do it correctly!” She thought over what occurred upon using the spell. “Maybe I’m putting too much energy into this spell.” It made sense to her that her training so far was to manipulate wind, but in most the cases presented so far, she didn’t have to worry about placing too much energy into it because more energy was just wasting that energy.
She tried the spell again, "Ol' Green Serpeant Who Descends From Heaven, Gales Erode Thy Pale Skin, and Breezes Replenish Thy Grieving Soul! The Forces Charge to Face The Foe Only to Turn; To Defend The West Wall!" She completed the motion with her Chakram and this time, rather than making the powerful torrent, a small gust flew from the blade. It dispersed after reach only about a foot from the Chakram. Not only that, but the gust also was rotating slowly. ‘I probably put too little energy into it.. and messed up the release of the wind?’ She tried to understand, or at least pretend to understand, the situation. "Ol' Green Serpeant Who Descends From Heaven, Gales Erode Thy Pale Skin, and Breezes Replenish Thy Grieving Soul! The Forces Charge to Face The Foe Only to Turn; To Defend The West Wall!" She did the actions, required with the incantation, again to once again be blown back by a torrent of wind.
“With less energy, it becomes weaker and is prone to dispersing. With more energy it would become stronger, but maybe it would be prone to wanting to use that energy. If the energy is less, it spins slowly, so maybe it’s trying to spin faster when it has more energy.” Yuri was putting pieces together from what she had observed and what she understood after working with similar techniques previously that day. “If the wind is excited because of the energy and it’s trying to spin, maybe the torrents are the result of the wind spinning in opposite directions at nearby points?” She now understood more as to why the wind was so chaotic when she put too much energy in and less when there was less energy. She recalled from the previous lesson, “With Shirokazewari I had to use both Chakrams, maybe I need to do that again with this one as well.” After formulating such logic, she prepared to try the spell again, "Ol' Green Serpeant Who Descends From Heaven, Gales Erode Thy Pale Skin, and Breezes Replenish Thy Grieving Soul! The Forces Charge to Face The Foe Only to Turn; To Defend The West Wall!" This time she moved the Chakrams from opposing shoulders to the opposite shoulders, synchronized enough to not tamper the original motion. A non-chaotic wind was produced, but the size was small.
Yuri quickly tried again, "Ol' Green Serpeant Who Descends From Heaven, Gales Erode Thy Pale Skin, and Breezes Replenish Thy Grieving Soul! The Forces Charge to Face The Foe Only to Turn; To Defend The West Wall!" The wind was once again formed perfectly, but at a small scale then it was intended to be. She tried again, "Ol' Green Serpeant Who Descends From Heaven, Gales Erode Thy Pale Skin, and Breezes Replenish Thy Grieving Soul! The Forces Charge to Face The Foe Only to Turn; To Defend The West Wall!" This time the left side was extended and had its width increased, but the larger side forced the wind to lop side again. "Ol' Green Serpeant Who Descends From Heaven, Gales Erode Thy Pale Skin, and Breezes Replenish Thy Grieving Soul! The Forces Charge to Face The Foe Only to Turn; To Defend The West Wall!" She was slowly getting closer to her goal of learning the spell. She practiced the spell until she was ready to eat dinner at 7pm. By then she was experienced enough with the spell to form the wind at the size intended.
“Time for dinner and then we can do the final part of the training today.” Yuri said as she went back to the basket with the food in it.
Training Day One, Part Four: Zanjutsu Training, 10pm – 12am 1,128 Words
Sayurin once again returned to her training after eating her meal. This final part of her training (at least for today) was intended to be Hakuda training, but after introducing a theory back during her Reiatsu training, Yuri was going to play around with it. The theory was in regards to using more energy to increase the destructive power of the explosive bomb of Senmidori’s Kyakujutsu ability. During her Reiatsu training, Yuri tested the theory and found some foundation to it and during her Hoho training she tried it a bit and saw results. To replace her intended Hakuda training, Yuri was now going to do Zanjutsu training, experimenting with Kyakujutsu with the hope of making it stronger.
“Kaze Kakureru, Senmidori Tenshi,” Yuri stated as she released Senmidori back into Shikai. Before taking any action, she took the one Chakram, the one with the yellow center, and placed it on Senmidori’s sheath. She figured that the ‘Flash Bomb’ effect of that Chakram wasn’t in need of strengthening and so she planned to practice only with the one for the time being. “Now what should I practice on?” She asked herself as she looked around her clearing, remembering the amount of destruction she performed on the trees nearby.
“Now that I think about it, I saw a pile of rocks over that way. Maybe they’ll hold up against the explosions?” She headed over in the direction she remembered seeing them. After a two minute walk, she found the pile of rocks which formed the jagged side of a cliff. Yuri figured that the rocks could take the explosion, and if they couldn’t, she could just throw the Chakram from a distance.
Yuri spent a couple minutes determining where she wanted to aim the Chakram before actually throwing it. She chose a sturdy-looking patch of wall near the side of the cliff/rock-pile and sent the bladed circle flying. She watched it carefully as the Chakram flew its curved path before coming just a foot from the selected section. At that moment Yuri used Kyakujutsu to detonate the Chakram.
A loud explosion pierced the air, originating from the patch of wall. Before the smoke could clear, the Chakram was already on its way back to Yuri who adroitly caught it. There was now a hole in the rock wall where the Chakram had made contact. To Yuri, the size of the hole wasn’t surprising for on this trial she used the Kyakujutsu as she was used to.
After a couple minutes of studying the wall and the size of the hole, she prepared to try and increase the power of the blast. She chose a spot just to the right of the first hole. She would’ve sent the Chakram flying again, but she knew that using the ability too much and too quickly would damage the weapon. Just to be safe, because she knew she would be using the ability a lot for the training, she waited five minutes before using the Chakram again. Once the time limit had passed, she sent the weapon soaring again towards the wall. It flew its curved path again roughly the same distance as before. This time Yuri was concentrating on increasing its power by transferring more energy. She made sure to detonate it at about the same distance as the first one.
Another explosion occurred, but this time it was clear that this one was larger for the sound was louder and the smoke covered a larger area. The Chakram returned to Yuri, but something about it drew her attention from the smoke. “There’s a crack in the blade.” It was miniscule, but not far from the blade’s hand-guard was a small crack. Yuri knew enough about the Kyakujutsu ability to know that it could damage the Chakram, as was evident earlier, but it bothered her that after the five minute wait, the blade still cracked. When she saw the hole, it was clear why it had happened. In the past, the explosive aspect of the ability never excelled above the blasting power of a level 31 Hado. The hole that was now created, however, clearly was of a stronger level. If the first hole was the after-effect of a level 31 Hado, then the new hole was on par with a level 50 Kido. Logically, to her, the increased power would deal more damage to the Chakram’s blade and would require more downtime to prevent damaging it.
She waited ten minutes next before using Kyakujutsu again. This time she tried to control the amount of energy she sent to the blade. The blade flew towards the wall and she detonated like earlier, but this time the explosion that was created seemed weaker than the previous one. Looking at the third hole, Yuri compared to something half-way between a level 31 and a level 50 Hado; a level 40 Hado.
“It looks like we’re getting somewhere.. Huh?” She looked at the Chakram’s blade to see that the crack had grown a little. She concluded that the downtime between the much stronger blast to this just some-what weaker blast wasn’t long enough to prevent further damage. She waited thirty minutes before continuing the training, talking with her zanpaktou during the wait.
Once she was sure it was safe to try again, Yuri threw it again. She aimed to get the same power as the last explosion. She wanted to get accustomed to the level because she felt that it was strong enough to make a difference, but weak enough that she didn’t have to wait too long before uses just like with the second explosion. While respecting the intervals that were required between uses, Yuri proceeded to practice different strengths of the explosion for about an hour. In that time period she got about four or five tries in, but the damage to the Chakram was becoming quite apparent. Cracks had appeared at different points on the blade, though luckily hadn’t expand enough to divide the blade.
“If I keep this up, it looks like the Chakram will snap, I’ll just finish up now.” She sealed the Chakram back into their dagger form and sheathed it. Next she walked back to the stump and grabbed the basket, which was now empty after having its contents devoured. “Hm.. I got a lot done and.,” She interrupted herself by yawning. “Maybe I should sleep in later tomorrow. What do you ya think Senmidori?” She waited for a response, but after looking at the time (12 am) she figured the young girl had fallen asleep. Yuri began walking back in the direction of the Squad 5 Barrack, but she then noticed how dark it was. The walk back included many loud screams as her fear of the dark crept in.

Training Day Two, Part One: Review, 9am – 12pm
Reiatsu Training Two, 9am – 10:30am 551 Words
It was the morning of the second day of Sayurin’s time off from work. Unlike the previous day, the Sun was now already up in the sky when she left the barracks. “I can’t believe I slept in!” She yelled as she quickly ran out of the Squad Five Barracks and headed back to her designated training location. It was now 8:30 when she intended to head out closer to 7. Her reason for wanting to leave so early was simple; she made a promise with Senmidori. Her dark blue hair, usually tied in a single ponytail though tied in two the previous day, was now tied with ribbons into multiple pigtails. She didn’t like the audience she was getting for the usual style, but she didn’t usually ignore a promise made with Senmidori.
She quickly made her way back to the stump. Next to it she placed the basket, as she did the day before, but she also brought a large light with it. She didn’t want to repeat the terror that was returning home in the dark the first night. “I think I will start with Reiatsu training again today.” She thought a loud. She knew that, like the first day, she needed Senmidori to effectively train and so she would wait for her childish friend to wake up. “I’ll just repeat the exercises from yesterday real quickly; make sure I’m as well off as I thought I was.”
She looked over the stump, which had become a landmark of the location, and found the spot from yesterday. She sat in the same spot as the day prior and began to relax her body. “Just need to relax everything,” She said to herself as she completely relaxed each and every part of her body. Once she felt ready she began to observe the flow of her Reiatsu. Like the day before, she expanded her Reiatsu and deflated it. The goal was once again to increase the speed while keeping the rate constant.
“I can feel a difference in my Reiatsu. It must be due to all the training yesterday.” The idea made her happy, not just because it meant she was stronger, but also because she noticed the difference. She began to expand her Reiatsu more than she was, while making sure the speed at which she performed the action didn’t suffer. As the hour passed she became more and more sensitive to the subtle increases in her power. Unlike the previous day she only performed this one exercise of expanding and deflating her Reiatsu for after a half pass an hour she was interrupted by a bored Senmidori.
“This is boring!” Yuri’s young zanpaktou loudly pointed out while she was trying to meditate. Yuri opened her eyes, momentarily forgetting she couldn’t see the spirit. “So, you’re awake?” She asked the childish voice while still focusing on her Reiatsu flow. “Yep, now let’s do something fun… CUTE!” She obviously just noticed Yuri’s unusual choice of hairstyle. “This is what you wanted, wasn’t it?” Yuri confirmed with the spirit. “Huh? What are you talking about?” Senmidori questioned her master, clearly without a clue as to what Sayuri was referring to. “…” After hearing that Yuri went and removed the ribbons from her hair, annoyed at how air-headed Senmidori could appear.
Hoho Training Two, 10:30am – 12:00pm 616 Words
Just as she had repeated the Reiatsu exercise from yesterday, she also reviewed the Hoho exercise from the passed day. Rather than starting with laps like she had done, instead Yuri started with the air walking. “Okay, same thing as yesterday! I just step up like this,” She rose her foot into the air before bringing it back down. By concentrating her Reiatsu, she was able to keep that foot in the air before bringing her other foot up to follow. “Huh?” She noticed a small drop in her left foot meaning she had to focus a little more. She took some steps higher into the air until she was standing above a tree. That’s not to say she was over the tree, but rather she was floating a distance higher than a tree near enough to compare. She chose the location so that, if she fell, she could regain some ground before hitting the ground.
“I just need to move around a bit; practice balancing my Reiatsu,” She pointed out as she began to jump about in the air. Her movements weren’t perfect, though, because quite often she found herself slipping and dropping a foot or two lower in elevation than intended. Still, she proceeded to move about in the air either jumping, running or Shunpoing from spot to spot. Now and then she would try to pull back on the amount of Reiatsu she was releasing to keep herself in the air. She wanted to do the task as efficiently as possible for she knew that if she consumed too much energy doing it; it would end up bad in the end.
Once she felt confident enough in her ability to stay in the air, she combined the current exercise with the other one she did the day prior. She was going to Shunpo to the wall, which she could now clearly see, and then Shunpo back. “Here we go!” She started towards the wall, Shunpoing once or twice before regaining her elevation. She went back and forth from where she saw the stump to the wall. Each lap she tried to reduce the number of steps needed and to keep her elevation as constant as possible.
After reaching about an hour into her current exercises she decided to try something different. “I’ll fall,” She stated as she stopped in place just above the clearing. “Wait, you’ll die!” Her zanpaktou quickly stated, worried about its master’s suggestion. “I’m not just going to drop, I’ll fall some feet and then stop myself in the air. Even if I don’t stop, I’m confident enough in my ability to at least slow down enough!” Yuri said and before Senmidori could argue her point, she had let herself fall through the air.
She felt the cold wind caressing her body as she passed through it. For one whose power revolved around control of the wind, she felt it a nice scenario. As much as she was confident in her ability to not die from this, she also felt that it would have been a nice way to die. Of course that’s not what happened. She fell to about half the distance to the ground and began to apply pressure on the air surrounding her feet. At first her drop slowed down as the wind could be seen solidifying under her feet. Then within two yards of applying pressure, she came to a complete stop. She jumped back up to original elevation and then repeated the action. She did it numerous times until her stomach growled, signaling it was time for breakfast. “Time to eat,” She said with a smile as she let herself ‘slide’ down to the stump.
Training Day Two, Part Two: Hado 58: Tenran, 1pm – 5pm 1,305 Words
“Wow, didn’t think I was that hungry,” Yuri said as she was putting the basket back in its spot next to the light. “Did you cook the food?” Senmidori asked for she wasn’t awake at the time. “Nah, there was a stall in the shopping district selling pre-made sandwiches; Thought it would be great to grab some.” Yuri was happy with her decision for the meal was great, but now she had to get back to her training. “Hm.. I guess I’ll go on to Kido like I did yesterday,” She stated as she pulled back out the slip of paper with the list of Kido. “Oh, how about I learn this one!” She exclaimed as she pointed to the last one listed. “Hado 58: Tenran. Although I said I tried every one of these listed, in the past, this is one that I haven’t tried. It would be my first of such a high level.” She read the description of the spell slowly. “It’s another wind Kido,” Senmidori concluded.
“I don’t understand this though; I take my zanpaktou, place it in the air, and then make it rotate.” She looked at the Chakram she already unsealed and her confusion increased. “How do I place my zanpaktou in the air!? Then how do I apply that to these!?” She questioned as she motioned to the two Chakram being held on their sheath (hanging on the sheath). She laid the two Chakram on the ground in front of her and took a seat on the stump. For a good fifteen to twenty minutes she stared at them trying to figure out what she was expected to do. The hard part wasn’t getting them to stay in the air, she was sure that was easier than her current predicament. A part of her told her that if she utilized the two Chakram incorrectly, she wouldn’t be able to cast the spell.
‘Even if I seal them, the dagger might not be as effective as an actual Katana,’ She thought as she tried to figure out a solution. It didn’t help that something else was bothering her at this time. She noticed that Senmidori hadn’t said anything. Throughout her training yesterday she had helped solve problems like this, but now she hadn’t said a word. “Senmidori Tenshi, you okay in there?” She asked the air around her, hoping to get a response. As a breeze blew across her face, sending her hair all over the place, Yuri had a bad feeling. The feeling dissipated quickly as the familiar voice appeared again, “Yea, I’m.. fine..” Yuri didn’t know what to say, but she recalled that many things could attribute to her sudden behavior. It was the young girl’s random nature that her master was familiar with.
She didn’t get any suggestions from Senmidori and thirty minutes had passed since she first pulled out the slip of paper. Sayurin thought through her training over the course of the two days, trying to find some clue as to what she could do. ‘This is a wind spell like the other three I learned. What did the other three have in common that this one might…’ She thought of a clear pattern between at least two of the three previous Kido. “They used both blades!” Of course she knew that could have been a solution, but she was now certain that that was the first solution in a line of solutions. “To get them to float I just need to manipulate the air around the blade.. hm.. but how do I position them both.” She was back to thinking over the situation.
“If I think about a regular katana, the blade is obviously straight. If it were to rotate, the blade would spin like this,” She used her arm to simulate the blade spinning, “So if these Chakrams are just rounded blades, to get the effect, I have to place them next to each other. One will spin while the other sticks to a point and revolves around the first Chakram.” She thought through the whole positioning aspect of the spell. She was so thorough with her analysis of how to position them, which she even set up a specific order of the two. Knowing that the yellow-centered Chakram almost always appeared in her right hand when she released them; as such she designated that Chakram to be the one in which the other would revolve around.
“Now I just need to apply what I learned from the other three spells plus the Hoho training,” She compared the air walking aspect of her training to using spell in that air was to be manipulated using Reiatsu. She held out both Chakram in the format that she assumed was correct. They were both held in front of her with their hand-guards touching; of which her hands were holding together. Upon saying the spells incantation she felt for any resistance to the gravity in which was pulling the Chakram downward. She felt some, but as she went to release the Chakram from her grasp it was quickly observed that they were going to fall.
She placed them together again and stated the incantation once more. The result was the same, there was some resistance, but the Chakram still fell. She reevaluated her previous training and thought of what she could do. She placed the two Chakram together again and spoke the incantation. This time she tried focusing more on the manipulation of the air. The resistance became more apparent, but the Chakram still were falling. “That’s weird.” As the Chakram fell she noticed that the one on the bottom began moving back and forth before dropping. It was strange because in her logic, it should have been the one that remained in place. “Maybe the problem is that I’m trying to attach one to the other? Maybe if I focus on attaching them both to each other… or… I don’t worry about attaching them?” She came to this conclusion because the one Chakram on the bottom moving back and forth and then falling would suggest that it’s trying to stay connected, but its grip isn’t enough.
“I’m not trying to hold them together; I’m holding them both in the air. Once they start rotating, their momentum should keep them together as they are if the wind surrounding them is holding them up.” With that idea in mind she attempted the spell again. She held the two Chakram in place and stated the incantation. This time the resistance was far more obvious, but in her excitement, Yuri lost focus and let the Chakram drop. She performed the routine again, though, and kept her cool this time. She let go of the two Chakram and they remained static in the air. With that accomplished, she was ready for the more important part of the exercise. Using two fingers on her right hand, she hit the inner, left side of the top Chakram and quickly pulled away. They began to spin, but nowhere near as fast as they needed to. At this point she had nothing more than a Kido-powered house fan.
Putting more Reiatsu, pushing harder on the blade and manipulating the wind more effectively were her solutions to try and reach the power she was expecting. Unlike the previous Kido that took a rather short time to get in check, it would take her about three more hours before she was satisfied. At that point the spell’s power was so destructive that she felt sorry for the trees she had now uprooted. Upon becoming proficient with the spell she decided to try something else for she spent so much of her training on this one. “I’ll do one more Kido before moving on I guess. Didn’t expect to spend so much time on that one.”
Training Day Two, Part Three: Kyokko-Shinobi-Iri, 5pm – 9pm 1,608 Words
Sayurin performed some stretches before moving on to the next Kido, she wanted to get energy flowing through her body after practicing such a powerful Kido. While she was stretching she made sure to take out the Kido list and look it over. “Which to work on now?” She questioned as she looked at all the Kido she hadn’t learned yet. Orchid sky was the last Kido on the list so she couldn’t continue her method of picking the next listed Kido. She then started going up the list to a Kido before the ones she just learned. That’s when her finger came to the Bakudo Kyokko. “Why’d you learn that bakudo anyway, don’t you have Shinobi-Iri for that?” Senmidori asked her, noticing the position of her finger. “Hm, I learned Kyokko before I learned Shinobi-iri, even before getting you. I guess right now it would be used for nothing more than situations in which Shinobi-Iri don’t work.” Yuri explained to her puzzled spirit.
“How often doesn’t Shinobi-iri work!?” It was obvious that Senmidori Tenshi wasn’t fond of that statement. “Well, with Shinobi-iri active, I’m very limited in what I can and cannot do. Kyokko has a lot more freedom such as the ability to use and hide items and Kido while in its effect. Shinobi-iri’s lining limits it way too much. Of course if Shinobi-iri was more like it that would definitely be great.”
That idea ran through Yuri’s head a couple times before giving her an idea. She thought over the benefits that Kyokko gave that Shinobi-iri didn’t have, “If they’re both similar abilities, then in theory they should both have the same potential.” She was close to an idea, but she still hadn’t patched the thoughts together into something tangible. “Hm.. Why does the lining limit Shinobi-iri and why doesn’t the same occur for Kyokko?” She was getting closer and closer as she began to think of the effects of both abilities. She acknowledged that Kyokko just reflected light while Shinobi-iri used wind to reflect light. The most major benefit of Shinobi-iri over the Kido was that it was more definite in its ability to conceal its caster.
“The reason Shinobi-iri uses a lining is so that it can stay in effect for longer and so it can use minimal wind in the process of using the ability,” She reasoned to herself, “So, by controlling the wind, I should be able to make Shinobi-iri more effective at the cost of its duration.” But then another thought crossed her mind. What if she could use both abilities at the same time? “That’s it! I’ll learn how to use Kyokko without an incantation and then use it to improve Shinobi-iri!”
Now she needed to figure out how to use Kyokko without an incantation. Yuri wasn’t too bad with Kido, but the reality was that she had not learned to use any Kido without an incantation. What she did understand of the act of chant less Kido was that she just needed to find the feel for the Kido and work with it without saying a word.
She started by casting Kyokko numerous times. She’d cast it, remove it, cast and remove it again. Every couple tries she’d try casting it with less words of the incantation. Each time she got more of a feel for the Kido’s effect and so each time she tried to mimic that effect. After so many tries she also tried something different, she used Shinobi-iri in order to get a feel for its effect as well. Not only because the spells are similar, but because she’d have an easier time later on when she can take these feelings and put them together.
“This seems a lot easier than I thought it would be.” Yuri stated as she got just short of being able to use Kyokko without its incantation. Really it had been an hour and a half since she started that she got this far, but it’s not bad for her first incantation-less Kido. A few more tries later and she was able to activate Kyokko just by saying the name of the spell.
“Now to work from the Shinobi-iri end.” She pointed out as she released Senmidori into her Shikai form. Once the Chakram had appeared, she placed one on top of the other a stated, “Shinobi-iri.” Just like that, the air around her reflected light and she vanished from sight. The easiest way she thought of to do what she intended to do was to manipulate the lining, spread it out (so it’s less of a lining, more like invisibility inducing clothing), and use it to effect other object. She also needed to work on moving things into and out of the cover without it breaking. Though, by making it less of a lining and learning to control the wind that creates the effect, it should be easier to do that.
Yuri thought back to her Reiatsu training and relaxed her body. She felt for the flow of Reiatsu that moved through the wind that surrounded her body, applying the invisibility effect. Once she was aware of the flow, she tried to expand it; manipulating more wind in the process. After expanding it, Yuri now became aware of the now finite duration of the technique. Energy was now needed to manipulate it because the air wasn’t remaining static; it was slowly moving around the surface of her body. To Yuri it felt like a breeze was blowing on her skin. She walked over to her basket of food and tried applying the invisibility effect to it. The air masking her body opened up to allow the basket in, but she noticed that more energy was needed to increase the size of the mask to in turn allow the basket in. She also realized that the hole created was way too big because anyone looking could see her inside and take advantage of that knowledge. For about 45 minutes she worked on absorbing things into her invisibility effect. By then she was confident enough that she could include two other persons of her size inside it without worrying about it breaking open or wearing off.
‘It’s a lot like cloak now, rather than a lining,’ Sayurin thought as she practiced the new version of her technique. She wasn’t too far off because the traits of the wind covering did match those of a cloak. Though it was soft like air, if given a texture it would feel like wearing something cloth-like. Also, just like a cloak the covering could be pulled open to allow other things under it. Of course, the difference between this covering of wind and a cloak would be that this one is virtually a part of Sayurin. She is unable to, for example, place it on something and/or someone else and walk off. However, going back to being able to pull it open, Yuri found that with some focus she could pull the covering open and close as she needed. Through her practice, she got it to the point that she can open it just far enough to let whatever she needed in and out, but she still would need to practice the speed of this activity. Throughout her training she noticed that it took a couple seconds to close it regardless of what went in and out. She experimented using different spells and abilities and the only one she really had a problem with would be her ability to throw her Chakram. Of course she could open the barrier right when the Chakram were returning from flight; generally, in her attempts, she opened to soon worrying that if she opened to let, they’d break through it.
With both Kyokko and Shinobi-iri under her complete control, Yuri was now ready to see how well she could combine the two. She removed the Shinobi-iri effect and got back into the stance to recast it. She placed both Chakram one on top of the other, but unlike usual she said something different. “Shinobi-iri, Bakudo 26: Kyokko.” Something happened, but not what Yuri was expecting. It was clear that Shinobi-iri took effect, but she felt it was no different than usual. “Maybe I can’t use them together.. and it uses the first one cast?” She considered, but she wasn’t going to accept that after spending so much time on this theory.
After a couple minutes she was back into Shinobi-iri stance, Chakram on top of Chakram. Instead of saying what she said previous, she reversed the order, “Bakudo 26: Kyokko.. Shinobi-ri.” Yuri had paused when saying that because she noticed Kyokko taking effect before she even said the later ability’s name. She figured that must have been the problem, she’d have to say them both at the same time to utilize them both. That was easy enough in theory, but Yuri had no clue how to actually do it. She thought it over for about twenty minutes before coming up with an idea.
She got back into stance, but this time she tried to remember the feeling of both abilities taking effect. Then once the Chakram were placed, she said her new command “Shinobi-Kyokko.” The effect was different, where light would have been bended in one of two means, Yuri could now feel it being bended by both. She felt the effects akin to Kyokko, but she also felt the wind dancing across her body like with Shinobi-iri. The reason she went with the specific wording this time was because Shinobi-iri in her first trial seemed to be slower in taking effect than Kyokko for it was in the second trial when she started with Kyoko’s name that she noticed it taking effect as she was stating the names. Thus she started with the slower effecting one and added on the faster. Apparently that correct wording caused both to take effect just quick enough to overlap.
“Now what?” That’s all Yuri could ask her after accomplishing the feat of combining the abilities. What she needed to do now was experiment with the options that this combo gave her. Over the course of two hours, that’s what she did. What she noticed in that time was that with both in effect, they were more efficient. Though it seem logical that more energy would be used, in reality less was used for both abilities seemed to sew themselves together making an effect similar to Shinobi-iri prior to Yuri’s recent improvements on it. Less energy is necessary to keep the effect in place after it takes effect.
“Hm.. looks like it’s getting late, maybe I should go to bed early before heading back to Squad 5 work tomorrow.” Yuri considered as she looked up to the sky to see the encroaching nightfall. “You’re just saying that because you don’t’ wanna walk around in the dark again.” Senmidori pointed out. “How would you know what happened last night? You were sleeping!” Sayurin retorted as she grabbed the basket and light. She headed back to the Squad Five Barracks and, not long after arriving back, she headed off to bed. After two days of training she had become completely exhausted.
